Rally is a purebred male Border Collie born on May 15th, 2011. He was a owner surrender to North Star in late March when his family realized they were not able to meet this handsome young guys needs. Rally is very energetic and acts like a young pup still, jumping up on people, whining for attention etc. we are working on all of his house manners. Rally weighs 32 pounds and does need to put on a few pounds however he is so active that is a daily battle. He can be fearful and reactive to new things and situations, barking at what he is leery of. Our main focus with him has been working with him to be comfortable when new people are approaching him, he reacts to new people by barking whether he is on leash, in the yard or in his crate.

He is a work in progress, it will take patience and continued socialiaztion with experienced Border Collie owners for him to become comfortable in new situations and meeting new people. Rally is very focused on balls and toys and is slowly realizing these are outside activities and throwing the ball at you in the house over and over is not acceptable. Rally does very well with both male and female dogs of all sizes, he is very gentle and loves to play with the 10 week old puppies we are fostering. He is quite guardy of his food, here all of our dogs are fed in their crates. Rally is okay at meal times as long as his crate is not right next to another dogs.

Rally is a VERY fast dog, so fast he hasn't quite learned to control his body yet. More often then not he is running so fast to get to his ball he goes head over heals or sideway rolls when he reaches it. The combination of speed and his energy level would not make him a ideal dog for a family with young children. He is great with kids however when focused on a toy/ball/bird he would easily knock a small child over if they were in the way. When that ball is in sight nothing deters him from getting it, he will easily jump over our other dogs rather then go around them to get to it.

Rally has been brought up to date on his vaccines, heatworm tested, on heartworm preventive, neutered and microchipped. He is crate trained and house broken. If you are interested in adopting Rally you must apply and be approved first. You can find our online application at: http://www.northstarbcrescue.org. If you have any questions please contact his foster mom at: Summerefx@hotmail.com.

Rally is being fostered near Roscommon, Michigan.

Rally has made huge strides in the last few months. We are now able to take him into stores and out in public without him reacting to every person he sees. Rally does very well with kids, women and most men. Very tall and big men will still cause him to start barking however as soon as his ball is brought out this stops and they are his new best friend ;) We have worked with him extensively on socialization and he has proven himself to be great around all dogs both tiny and large. Rally is very submissive with other dogs, if they get the ball he waits patiently for them to drop it then brings it to us to toss for him again.

Rally is VERY toy driven, if all the toys are put up often times he'll find his own version of a toy. A sock from the laundry he tosses in the air and catches over and over and he's not beyond swiping a bottle of water and playing catch with that too. He's learned that when no one wants to play ball...going to the top of the stairs and dropping it he can play fetch by himself  Rally does the same thing with the pool, drop the toy in at one end then run to the other end to jump in and swim to get it. He is very playful with our dogs, play bowing and trying to entice them to a game of chase with a toy or a stick. They will usually play with him but seldom play chase, they've realized that no matter what their strategy they aren't going to be able to catch him he is far too fast for even our female Border Collie.

Rally has overcome so much in such a short amount of time, we are so proud of this guy! He no longer guards his food or even high value chews. He is a very smart boy and quick to catch on to everything we've taught him so far. His recall is great and he is off leash daily with us outside, he has shown no interest in the squirrels, chipmunks or feral cats up here. His interest in wildlife are the birds that are flying by, just calling his name when he is chasing one brings him back to our side. Geese and ducks in the water are another story...calling his name wasn't enough he needed the squeak of his tennis ball to bring his focus back to us.

He is not a companion level dog, he will never be content to just lay around the house. Rally is high energy and will play ball for a hour before he is tired. He loves diving off the boat for a toy thats thrown and will swim for about a 1/2 hour non-stop before going to the ramp to climb in the boat. He loves long walks and we've just started teaching him to run along side the bike, walks are not enough for this guy he needs a much faster pace as a outlet for his energy. Rally will need experienced Border Collie owners to continue socializing him to new things and people or he will revert back to the fearful dog he was before.

Rally loves the lake, he would make a great dock diving dog! This is him jumping with no running start off the pontoon.
