Re: Booker ~ Male Aussie Pup ~ NOT READY FOR ADOPTION

Postby Carole » Wed Apr 06, 2011 1:43 am

Booker hurt his leg when his brothers jumped on the door and he was in the process of going out of it. His leg was caught in it and they were jumping on it to get outside. He broke the ulna bone, which is a non-weight bearing bone. The vet said she expects him to have no long term restrictions once it is healed.

He will be going in every 2 weeks for 6 weeks to have his cast redone as he grows. Booker will not be available for adoption until he is fully healed.

Booker is now 6 months old and ready to find his forever home. When his cast came off his tendons in his leg were very tight, these needed to be restreched slowly so they didn't tear. Doing daily exercises that the vet showed us, then swimming when the water warmed up seems to have his leg just about normal. His paw and leg seem to have the range of motion that his other leg has. He rarely favors that leg now after playing or exercising. Booker saw the vet today, she was extremely pleased with his leg when she examined it. His leg is 100% now and he has no restrictions or limitations.

Booker would do best being able to be near his people most of the time. Booker is crated trained and sleeps in his crate at night, he is quiet as long as he is in the same room as you are and goes into his crate on his own as soon as we start turning lights off at night.

Booker will need a home with obedience and herding experience. He is a strong resource guarder of people. Anyone that shows him any attention and another dog comes near them, he often becomes defensive of that person. We are working with him on this, however this is something that will need to be continually addressed. Booker plays and gets along great with other dogs as long as he isn't next to his person.

Coming from actively working parents, Booker already has a strong herding drive. He will not be placed in a home with children, both his energy level and herding drive would be too much to handle with children. Booker by himself will settle down quickly in the house. When our dogs come in he will continually try to get them to play until they correct him.

Booker loves the water and is a wonderful swimmer, he would make a excellent dock diving dog. However that love of water has issues. He has learned just from watching us turn on the hose, how to do it himself. We are working with him to stay out of the toilets, he will lift the lid and "dig" it dry. He will do the same with the water dish if he is hot, first he puts his front paws in the dish and stands for a minute. Then he will try to dig that dry also, laying down in the water he's flung all over the floor. When you shower he will stand at the door waiting to get in, it's not uncommon to find him in a wet bathtub laying down to cool off. The least bit of water is fair game to this guy whether it's the muck in the ditch, a kiddie pool or the lake.

Booker has been microchipped, neutered and is current on all his vaccinations including Bordatella, and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative.
